Residents of Barbano, some 350 km southwest of Madrid, told Spanish National Television they were taken in buses to nearby towns early Wednesday after a dike on the Guadiana River collapsed with the rising waters and threatened to flood their town.
Weeks of heavy rains have led to flooding of farmland and roads in many areas of southern and western Spain through which the major Guadalquivir and Douro rivers flow.
Spanish National Television said at least 12 people had to be rescued by emergency services Tuesday.
At least two people died when a bridge collapsed in flooding Monday in the south-central town of Fuencaliente.
