December 19, 2012 — Two days of torrential rains, causing floods and mudslides, have left 14 people dead and 16 missing across Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka depends on monsoon rains for irrigation and power generation, but the seasonal downpours frequently cause deaths and damage to property in low-lying areas
Sri Lanka's government says flash floods and mudslides have killed 16 people, with 14 others reported missing, after days of heavy rain in many parts of the country.
A Disaster Management Center report Wednesday said that nearly 10,000 people have been displaced from their homes.
Many roads have been inundated.
The report says troops have been deployed in rescue and relief operations.
