With more heavy snow in Edmonton's forecast, some people may be anxious to escape the winter conditions.

Palm trees, coconuts, heat and humidity. It's all available inside the 'tropical' pyramid at the Muttart Conservatory.

“It’s a really fun experience. It's four different pyramids with four different climates and four different biomes,” says Sarah Birmingham with Muttart Conservatory.

The temperature inside the tropical pyramid is 25 degrees year round. The conservatory also showcases an arid, temperate and feature pyramid as well.

“The Temperate is kind of like BC. In the summer time, it’s beautiful and there are so many things blooming. The Arid is our desert and it’s a little bit cool at night and then warms up in the day, just like your typical desert," adds Birmingham.

The Muttart Conservatory also houses over 5,000 orchids, which require heat and humidity in order to bloom.

“We keep each pyramid climate controlled through a computer. So we can pump up the heat. We can add mist and we can create more humidity," explains Birmingham.

People of all ages visit several times a year, making it a landmark in the city of Edmonton.

"It’s unique in its structure. It’s unique in what we grow and what we offer and now we’re trying to find very rare things to grow," says Birmingham.

The tallest growing flower and a 32-year-old plant are just some examples of the rare and exotic plant life on display.
