February 18, 1993: Fog leads to car pileup in Beauharnois, Quebec

Staff writers
February 18, 2013 — On February 18, 1993, foggy conditions led to a major chain reaction, multi-car pileup in southern Quebec.

More than 50 vehicles were involved in the accident, which occurred on a bridge over the Beauharnois canal, just south-west of Montreal.

Heavy fog rose off the water and reduced visibility to zero along the highway.

The pileup happened during the morning rush hour and it closed the roadway in both directions for several hours.

Several people were injured but police reported no fatalities.
