Staff writers
April 7, 2013 — Fatal collision sent three others to hospital

One person is dead and three others injured in a head-on collision on the Trans-Canada Highway in Calgary.

Emergency services reported the female driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene while the three occupants of the other vehicle were taken to hospital, and are now in a stable condition.

The collision happened on the highway near the Canada Olympic Park around 7 a.m., when the city of Calgary was under a freezing drizzle warning, and officials say the road surface at the time was "extremely slippery," making for a challenging rescue.

The highway was shut down for several hours as police conducted their investigation, but was re-opened to traffic in the late morning.

Calgary received around six hours of freezing drizzle in the early morning hours, with precipitation now switching to flurries. Officials are warning residents to avoid travel for the time being.
