A breath-taking video of a dolphin stampede has spread like wildfire across the internet, garnering more than 2 million views.

The scene unfolded earlier this month, when passengers aboard a Dolphin Safari tour boat were treated to an unusual surprise.

Out of nowhere, the pod of 1,000 dolphins roared past the coast, jumping directly over the excited passengers.

Experts say the occurrence is "extremely rare."

It's estimated the dolphins were moving at about 40 km/h.

The footage was captured in southern California, which is home to approximately 450,000 dolphins.
