Toronto Zoo celebrates Hudson the polar bear's first birthday

Staff writers
October 14, 2012 — A huge birthday cake and a big crowd helped Hudson celebrate his first birthday.

Hudson the polar bear is used to making headlines.

When he was born a year ago at the Toronto Zoo, Hudson - along with his two siblings - were rejected and attacked by their mother.

Hudson was the only survivor of the attack. Zoo officials quickly stepped in to rescue and care for the cub.

His caretakers have had him on a strict diet, but on Sunday, he was granted a special birthday treat.

Hudson gobbled up a giant slab of ice shaped like the number one, containing fruit, veggies, whipped cream, cereal and mincemeat.

A huge crowd turned out to take part in the birthday festivities.
