November 1, 2012 — Freezing rain and treacherous roads hampered the morning commute in Alberta on Thursday.

Motorists are being advised to use caution as a broad swath of freezing rain coats streets and highways across central and southern Alberta.

Earlier this morning, drivers were forced to scrape a layer of ice off their windshields before heading out, the result of a weather system that's brought warmer, moisture-laden air to the province.

The rain has been freezing on contact with cold surfaces, leading to reports of several accidents in the Edmonton region alone.

Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for southern Alberta, including the city of Calgary.

In northern Alberta, freezing rain has turned into snow. Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings, forecasting between 5 and 10 centimetres before the snow tapers off Thursday evening.
