The Assiniboine Park Zoo announced Wednesday that the red panda cub, born at the end of June, now has a name - Kiah!

'Kiah' means 'from the beautiful place.' Last weekend, the zoo encouraged the community to vote for their favourite of four potential names, either in person or on the zoo's Facebook page. Kiah came out on top, with 354 of the more than 1,000 votes total.

Its great to see such a large response from the public and I think Kiah will be very happy with her new name, said Tim Sinclair-Smith, Director of Zoological Operations at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

The female cub was born June 30 to parents Rufus and Rouge.

Saturday, September 15 was International Red Panda Day. The red panda's natural habitat stretches through Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and southwestern China.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as "vulnerable," with a remaining population of around 10,000.
