July 20, 2012 — Fire crews are on alert as a fire in northeastern BC prompts an evacuation alert.

An evacuation alert has been issued for residents in the Suhm Creek region, about 120 km northeast of Fort Nelson.

Officials say the alert for the rural area is simply a precaution in response to the wildfire in the northeast.

The fire covers 48 square kilometres, but currently poses no danger to properties in the area.

Officials say more than 20 new fires have sparked this week and open fires are banned for the time being.
