Calgarians take to the trails

Kelsey McEwen, reporter
October 21, 2012 — It was a crisp fall morning in Calgary, and while most people would be bundling up, one group of avid hikers was out enjoying the weather.

Margaret Meisner has been with the Calgary Outdoor Club for the last eight years, but says her love of the trail started at a young age.

"My mom used to make my sister take me out because I love hiking ... ever since I could walk," she said.

Now, the club offers her and others all types of activities -- from cross country skiing to snowshoeing --year-round, none of which seem to be hindered by the turbulent Alberta weather.

Geoff Chiddell, another hiker, says while he loves the mountains, you don't even have to head out of the city to enjoy the view.

"I live in the northwest of Calgary and places like this are my favourite -- like Crescent Heights," he said.

Most of the hikers featured above are regulars to the trails. They say the best part of it all is combining fitness with friends.
