November 19, 2012 — The Canadian government has announced it will invest $700,000 dollars in a bid to improve the international market for Canadian wild blueberries.
Canada is the world's largest producer of wild blueberries with exports worth $199 million in 2011.
On Monday, Nova Scotia MP Scott Armstrong announced that the government will invest in the Wild Blueberry Association of North America in hopes of generating more revenue from the product.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the funds will be used for research and to improve international distribution.
In Canada, blueberries are harvested between late summer and early autumn. A large percentage of the fruits are picked by hand in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
