Celebrating Panda Awareness Week comes to a close

Staff writers
July 7, 2012 — Crowds have flocked to the Chengdu Research Base in southwest China in celebration of Panda Awareness Week.

Panda Awareness Week is drawing to a close in southwest China -- but a steady stream of visitors continues to stop by the Chengdu Panda Base, a highly successful breeding and research centre.

Scientists have been releasing footage of their furry friends - like the video above - to raise interest and spark awareness about the campaign.

In London, England, people gathered in Trafalgar Square to commemorate the week.

One-hundred and eight people - one for every panda currently living in the Chengdu Panda Base - dressed up as the black and white bears to perform a round of Tai Chi.

There are less than 1,600 pandas left in the wild - making them one of the world's most high-profile endangered species.

Panda Awareness Week runs until Sunday.
