Landslide Strikes Northwest China

March 11, 2010 — At least 17 people have died as a result of a landslide in northeastern China.

A landslide came crashing down in China's northwest Shaanxi province on Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and leaving 11 others missing.

It hit the Shuanghuyu village in the early morning hours, destroying about 25 houses and trapping more than 40 people.

More than 400 rescue personnel are currently taking part in the rescue and recovery, including firemen, policeman and those specialized in coal mine rescues.

At this point, the teams say the chances of survival for those trapped inside buildings are slim.
