November 12, 2012 — A magnitude-6.8 struck northern Myanmar on Sunday, collapsing a bridge. At least a dozen people are feared dead.

A powerful quake struck northern Myanmar at 7:42 a.m. local time, Sunday morning. 

While the quake was felt over a large portion of the region, small communities close to the epicentre were the hardest hit.

According to local media, more than 100 homes and 48 government offices, a bridge and a gold mine have been destroyed.

The quake was felt more than 1,400 kilometres away, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The disaster comes a week ahead of a scheduled visit to Myanmar by U.S. President Barack Obama.
