A powerful quake struck northern Myanmar at 7:42 a.m. local time, Sunday morning.
While the quake was felt over a large portion of the region, small communities close to the epicentre were the hardest hit.
According to local media, more than 100 homes and 48 government offices, a bridge and a gold mine have been destroyed.
The quake was felt more than 1,400 kilometres away, in Bangkok, Thailand.
The disaster comes a week ahead of a scheduled visit to Myanmar by U.S. President Barack Obama.
