92-year-old Andrew Nykilchuk receives his "angel wings" for being a great neighbour
Andrew Nykilchuk isn’t your ordinary neighbour.
After every snowfall he goes out and clears his neighbours’ sidewalks and walkways. At 92 years of age, it’s no wonder his neighbour’s call him, Edmonton’s unsung hero.
“He keeps my walkways clean all winter long,” says neighbour Elaine Armstrong.
"And he gives us really good motivation to get out there ourselves and not be lazy or complacent about helping others," adds another neighbour Jessica Houle.
Andrew says he certainly doesn’t feel his age, so he helps out whenever he can.
"I classify myself as an older teenager," he laughed.

Andrew received a framed certificate from the city recognizing him for “Being A Good Neighbour.”
He also got his “angel wings”, after his neighbours nominated him for the City’s Snow Angel program.
"The Snow Angel program is an awareness and recognition program. It really encourages citizens to look down their street or block to see if there is someone that requires some support with snow removal," explains Elvie De Benedetto, Senior Program Planner with the City of Edmonton. "People can then simply step forward to volunteer and help others out."
For Andrew it’s about being active and doing his best to be a good Samaritan.
“To me, it’s self satisfaction and as long as I can help my neighbour, that’s my day.”
