Bethany Ryan, the village clerk in Stanley, says the homes of about 35 residents along the Nashwaak were evacuated Thursday as the river spilled its banks.
Ryan says the main road and the village centre was covered by about a half metre of water within 15 minutes, making it the worst flooding Stanley has seen in about 40 years.
She says flood waters have since receded, though a number of homes and businesses in the village of 450 people remain surrounded by water.
Schools in Stanley were closed on Friday due to localized flooding.
Nadine Caissie Long of River Watch says water levels should continue to decline over the next two days, although she warns conditions could change so residents should be on alert.
