A massive tornado struck a steel mill in the city of Taranto just days after owners announced their intentions to close down the facility.

One person was reported missing, after reportedly working in a crane that was swept out to sea, and about 25 others were injured, according to ANSA news agency.

Meanwhile, Europe's largest steel mill, Ilva, sustained significant damage in wake of the massive twister.

Owners of the plant announced on Monday that they would be shutting down the plant because of reported health concerns, including cancer and respiratory diseases, associated with the steel mill.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti will meet with plant officials on Thursday to discuss the situation.
