A local state of emergency has been declared after damage to a sewage system lift pump in a western Manitoba town that's playing host to hundreds of athletes.
The emergency was declared early Wednesday evening in Swan River, where upwards of 800 Manitoba Summer Games athletes are staying this week.
Town officials say the damaged pump has created the potential for sewage backups in the community, which has seen heavy rain in recent days.
Emergency equipment is keeping the system going, but residents are being urged to limit water consumption. They are also being asked to lift furniture off basement floors, as well as cover shower drains and toilets.
The town says it's working with the games committee and events will go ahead as planned.
