At first, workers attempted to use a chainsaw on the icicle, but melting water began to dull the blades.
Lisa Tootoosis, who lives in the building next door, was worried the ice mass could fall right through her windows and brought it to a supervisor's attention. The caretaker said the ice weighed so much it could smash right through the walls.
The Saskatoon Fire Department finally had to step in and shatter the ice.
It caused a stir on social media. The icicle even spawned its own short-lived Twitter account.
"I'm being chipped away, bit by bit," it tweeted around 3 p.m. local time.
An hour later, it bid farewell:
"There's less and less of me all the time. I think this is my last tweet. Thanks to my followers for making me big. Love you Saskatoon," it said.
