According to police officials around 85 collisions were reported in Edmonton between 6am and 4pm on Wednesday.
Over 15 cm of snow piled up in a short time, which lead to reduced visibility and poor driving conditions.
By mid-afternoon RCMP had issued travel advisories warning motorists to avoid any unnecessary travel.
Although weather conditions improved through the afternoon hours, highways around Edmonton remained slick and dangerous.
Crews worked through the night in an effort to clear major roads, bus routes and city streets. A seasonal parking ban may be implemented as a way to keep roads clear when heavy snow falls.
Officials say with two weeks still left until the official start of winter, the city may already be running out of room to move the snow. Especially after more snow than usual fell across the area in November.
