Chris Scott explains how March 2013 stacks up against March 2012

March 21, 2013 — Numerous heat records were broken in March 2012. That's quite a difference from the wintry weather the country has experienced this year.

March 2013 is shaping up differently from the March that Canada had last year.

For those of you anxiously awaiting the start of spring, we have bad news: the trend of cold weather the country has been seeing looks like it will continue, at least into next week.

Many places -- with the exception of Quebec and Labrador -- have seen below-average March temperatures, while parts of China and the Middle East have seen above-average highs.

Last year, the reverse happened.

In 2012, Saudi Arabia had snow in early March, while warm weather settled into Canada.

"Some records were broken on March 21, 2012 then re-broken on the 22nd," says Rob Davis, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

"Another interesting fact: March 22, 2012 is the only day in recorded history that the max temperature was more than 20 degrees above normal -- 20.6 to be exact -- at Toronto Pearson International Airport."

Here's a look at the all-time March records broken in March 2012 from Manitoba to Atlantic Canada.
