Defence Minister Peter MacKay says a contract Ottawa has signed with Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax will let it start work on Arctic patrol ships.

MacKay says the 9.3-million-dollar contract will allow the shipbuilding company to review the design and devise a construction plan.

The patrol ships are the first vessels expected to be built under the overall 35-billion-dollar national shipbuilding project.
