March 27, 2012 — A 63-year-old man is dead after he fell through the ice while fishing on a pond near Placentia, Newfoundland.

Authorities say the man was fishing on Drummers Pond, near Placentia, NL -- about 140 km southwest from St. John's.

Police say the Fox Harbour resident was walking towards the centre of the pond when he fell through unstable ice just after 7 am Tuesday morning.

A passing fisherman saw him and tried to help but had to turn back because of the poor ice conditions. Firefighters used boats to get to the area and eventually pulled his body from the water around 10 am. They rushed the unidentified man to a hospital in Placentia, where he was pronounced dead.
