During this time, The Queen of Alberni ferry was en route to Vancouver Island.

Minutes after leaving its dock in southern Vancouver, the vessel collided with a Japanese coal freighter.

The ferry returned to dock under its own power, but it was heavily damaged.

The Japanese freighter sustained a 10 metre gash along its port side.

It was the second B.C. ferry accident to occur in fog in five weeks.
