Rideau Canal Skateway still closed as Winterlude comes to an end

February 20, 2012 — Tourists who came to Ottawa for the final weekend of Winterlude were unable to skate on the Rideau Canal due to mild weather and poor ice conditions.

As the Winterlude festivities in Ottawa winded down over the long weekend, skating was still not allowed on the Rideau Canal Skateway.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) announced last Thursday that the Rideau Canal Skateway had been closed for skating until further notice. The NCC says it will resume maintenance on the ice when weather permits.

Temperatures have been below the freezing mark, but the NCC warns that snow, rain or water on top of the ice may disguise deterioration of the ice or its' thickness.

On Monday, the Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques-Cartier Park and Confederation Park were open to the public.

While the Rideau Canal Skateway is one of the major Winterlude attractions, its season is tied to the weather and not the end of the festival. This year, the skateway didn't open until January 31, just ahead of the start of Winterlude. The canal suffered some setbacks in January due to rain and fluctuating temperatures.
