Lyndsay Morrison, staff writer

October 1, 2012 — Sunday night stargazers in parts of Canada captured photos of the Northern Lights. We put together a collection of the best ones.

The Northern Lights in Labrador City Sunday night

If the skies were clear and the light pollution was low, you may have been treated to quite the sight on Sunday night.

The Aurora Borealis was visible in many parts of Canada. Reports of viewers witnessing the Northern Lights streamed into our newsroom throughout the night, from Alberta to Labrador.

A long filament of solar material erupted into space, also known as a coronal mass ejection, on September 27, triggering a strong geomagnetic storm on earth Sunday.
Even with the full Harvest moon in the sky, the vibrant colours of the solar storm were visible, even in major cities like Edmonton and Calgary.

In the United States, there were reports of the Northern Lights being spotted in Montana, Ohio, and even as far south as Maryland.

You can upload your photos of the Aurora Borealis any time to our web gallery.
