February 14, 2012 — The Town of Oakville has been rewarded for its commitment to green initiatives.

Oakville has been a long-time supporter of sustainable living and now, that commitment been recognized by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).

FCM presented Oakville Town Council with a Sustainable Communities Award in the Green Buildings and Initiatives category for the development of the new Oakville transit facility and the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Both buildings have achieved LEED silver certification.

LEED - which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - is a certification process that assesses a building based on its design, construction, and ability to conserve energy, among other things.

Eighty municipalities submitted projects to the FCM for consideration. Oakville was the only winner in the buildings category.

"We are extremely pleased to receive this national award," Cindy Toth, director of environmental policy for the Town of Oakville, tells The Weather Network. "[It] demonstrates that we're making great strides towards bringing green building into everyday operations."

In 2010, Oakville City Council approved a series of detailed guidelines for sustainable design and construction that will facilitate additional, LEED-worthy projects.

"We're working towards becoming the most liveable town in Canada," Toth says, "and we're doing that by continuing to ... 'green' our [transportation] fleet, make sustainable purchases and factor in the environmental, social and economical implication of our projects."
