November 15, 2012 — The British oil company has been fined $4.5 billion by the U.S. government for the oil spill that affected the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.
In a press release released on Thursday, BP said that it will plead guilty to criminal charges relating to the spill.
The oil company also agreed to plead guilty to one count of obstruction of Congress.
The total payment of $4.5 billion over five years includes nearly $1.3 billion in criminal fines - a record - in addition to payments to various government and environmental agencies.
