Typically, polar bears frolicking in snow is nothing to talk about -- but it is when the polar bears are in sunny California.

Pike, 30, and Ulu, 32, got a very sub-zero treatment earlier this month when the San Francisco Zoo blew in 10 tonnes of man-made snow into their habitat.

The celebration was in honor of the bears' old ages, since the average life span of their species is half their ages. This makes Pike and Ulu among the oldest polar bears to live in an accredited zoo in the United States.

"As the worldwide symbol of climate change, the presence of polar bears both in the wild and in zoological educational programs is a vital tool in carrying the messages of conservation," the San Francisco Zoo said in a statement.

The San Francisco Zoo has housed 693 individual animals representing about 197 species as of 2011.
