January 26, 2013 — The UK is bracing for potential flooding as a wintry system moves into the region.

A massive storm with wind gusts of up to 115 km/h is swirling in the northern Atlantic.

While the worst is expected to remain off-shore, the UK will receive a heavy dose of precipitation, starting this weekend.

"The most powerful winds are over the water," says Gina Ressler, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

"When winds and rain associated with this system move into the UK, it will bring milder air along with it."

On Saturday morning, cars in were stranded on major roadways due to a blast of snow.

Most is expected to melt as the warm air moves in and that, combined with additional precipitation, has ramped up flood concerns.

Nearly 200 flood warnings and alerts have been issued in England and Wales ahead of the storm.
