At least one person is dead and dozens injured following a powerful tornado that ripped through the city of Tsukuba Sunday, 60 km outside of Toyko.

Local media reported that the damaging winds tore rooftops from houses, shattered windows and downed power lines and telephone poles.

Lightning was also reported in the area.

Tokyo Electric Co. said that as many as 24,000 homes lost power during the storm.

While Japan does get the occasional tornado, they're rarely seen in the Tokyo area.
