October 25, 2012 — A new report by Green Cross Switzerland and the Blacksmith Institute suggests that pollution poses a health risk worldwide.
A new report published by Green Cross Switzerland and the Blacksmith Institute claims that pollution is a major health concern, soon to be on par with malaria and tuberculosis.
“Pollution problems and toxic substances are proven to endanger the health of almost 125 million people worldwide,” said Nathalie Gysi, Executive Director of Green Cross Switzerland, in a press release.
The findings are based on data from 49 countries. Some of the world's most toxic pollution problems include battery recycling, described as the worst offender, followed by various industrial activities, like lead smelting, ore processing and chemical production.
The report makes a series of recommendations, such as allocating more resources to cleaning up polluted sites and implementing clean technologies in the industrial sector.
While the authors note their numbers are not "conclusive" they hope the study will outline the "potential scale" of the pollution problem.
