Tornadoes reported as severe weather sweeps Saskatchewan, Alberta

July 4, 2012 — Forty-eight tornado warnings were issued Tuesday night as severe thunderstorms swept through the southern Prairies.

Environment Canada says there was one "probable" Tornado near Olds, Alberta, and one "possible" tornado elsewhere.

In Saskatchewan, the agency says there were three "probable" and one "possible" tornado in the area of Davidson and Quill Lake.

Just before 3:00 p.m. local time Tuesday night, storm chaser Greg Johnson captured footage of multiple funnel clouds forming near Outlook, south of Saskatoon, with at least two tornadoes touching down.

Forty-eight tornado warnings were issued along a broad swath of Saskatchewan during the height of the storm.

Heavy rain was also reported in multiple communities, along with golfball-sized hail in Lafleche.

In neighbouring Alberta, some storm damage was reported in the area of Didsbury-Olds, Alberta, where one of our viewers reported the storms ripped out trees and damaged a barn and a neighbour's house, although no one was injured. Environment Canada later said there was a "probable" tornado in the area, although there was also a report of a tornado near the community of Halkirk.

Heavy rain and flooding were also reported in Red Deer.

Low pressure triggered the storms, which also brought hail, damaging winds and rain and Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Heading into Wednesday, the day could bring more chance of isolated severe thunderstorms, this time mostly in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, with a potential for strong winds and hail.
