A low pressure system is moving from British Columbia across the Rocky Mountains into Alberta.
Weather Network meteorologist Brian Dillon says the system is very likely to produce severe thunderstorms into Wednesday evening.
"Thunderstorms will increase in coverage through to the evening hours, and widespread thunderstorms will develop throughout Alberta," Dillon says.
"At the moment, parameters are in place for large, damaging hail, and a slight risk of an isolated tornado or two throughout Alberta before dark."
Aside from hail, most severe thunderstorms also have a potential for strong winds and heavy rain.
Hail of a size of 3.5 cm reported was reported in the area of Whitecourt in the early evening, as well as some funnel clouds elsewhere.
