November 4, 2012 — A snowstorm affecting eastern and northern China this weekend is being blamed for the deaths of two Japanese tourists.

Two women, aged 62 and 68, died after being trapped by heavy snow in a mountain in north China's Hebei province.
Meanwhile, rescue workers continue to search for a missing 76-year-old man.
Two other tourists have been rescued and are receiving treatment at a village clinic. The group had been on their way to tour the Beijing side of the Great Wall when they became trapped.
As of early Sunday, authorities in Beijing issued a citywide orange alert and regional red alert advising of inclement weather due to the blizzard conditions.
The city saw 5.8 cm of rain and snow combined – a new record for the highest daily total, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Western Beijing has mainly received blizzards, while the city's east side has been experiencing freezing rain and snow.
Local meteorologists say the worst of the active weather has been over northern China.
Winds were gusting over 40 km/h and snowfall amounts have exceeded 40 cm.
Widespread travel disruptions have plagued the city of Zhangjiakou, whose traffic department closed a total of five highways.
In Beijing, several trains were delayed at the West Railway Station.
The weight of the snow toppled power lines, knocking out power for about 23,000 residents in the Yanqing County northwest of Beijing.
The snow and gusty winds are forecast to continue through the rest of the weekend.
