April 30, 2012 — People in southern Ontario woke up to a chilly morning on Sunday, but by the end of the week, temperatures could climb to the mid 20s.

Residents of Hamilton, Goderich, Collingwood and even parts of the Greater Toronto Area woke up to record-breaking cold temperatures on Sunday morning. In Hamilton the temperature dipped to a frigid -2.6C, breaking a record that's been in place for more than 30 years.

"Records were broken both Saturday and Sunday morning in southern Ontario, this was caused by a high-pressure system that was parked over the area," explains Brian Dillon, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

But by mid-afternoon, Hamilton had climbed to the mid teens -- and a large part of the region will see a similar warm-up this week.

"As the high-pressure system drifts off to the east, winds will start to invade the area on Tuesday with a warm front from the United States," Dillon says. "With that, we'll see some scattered showers in the area."

By the end of the week, it will be feeling more like summer than spring. "Temperatures will climb to the mid-20s later in the week, with the humidex making it feel more like 30C," explains Dillion. "With that, there will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms across the region on Wednesday and Thursday."
