“We weren't expecting this.”
That's what people in Spain were saying about the latest round of severe floods on Thursday.
Conditions had improved in Cantabria and Asturias, but torrential rain soaked the Spanish Basque Country, leaving dozens of homes under water.
Emergency crews have been working around the clock, rescuing stranded residents and trying to get the flood waters cleared. An emergency helicopter was also on hand to help.
“In 20 years, I haven't seen floods like this,” said one resident.
“It's chaos,” said another.
Several roads have been closed and villages have been evacuated due to rivers spilling their banks.
Flooding has also been a major problem in France this week, after the Mediterranean coast was hit with its heaviest downpours in nearly 175 years.
