Storm surges wreak havoc in some coastal Newfoundland and Labrador communities
March 31, 2013 — Newfoundland and Labrador's east and northeast coasts were battered by storm surges over the weekend, with some swells reaching up to nine metres.
Petty Harbour fisherman John Hearn says high waves slammed into the town's shoreline Thursday evening and destroyed a structure.
Hearn says the town council and harbour authority went to work on Friday to clean up the debris.
The Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club in Conception Bay South also suffered significant damage following Friday's storm surge.
The rock seawall that protects vessels has almost completely washed into the water.
