May 1, 2012 — Skywatchers should turn their heads - and telescopes - to the sky Saturday night. A super moon is set to make an appearance.

The full moon will be extra bright this weekend.

That's because a "super moon" is set to take over the sky. It will become visible at 11:35 pm EDT.

This phenomenon occurs when a full moon reaches its closest point to the earth, making it appear larger than usual.

It's been speculated that a super moon can trigger earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but there is little evidence to support the claim.
