Surprise your loved one with a Valentine's Quartet

Nathan Coleman, Reporter
February 14, 2013 — Valentine's Day shopping can be tough, so why not surprise your special someone with a love song?

Life can sometimes be less surprising than a box of chocolates when you’re searching for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

There’s the perennial bouquet of flowers, or you could even go cheesy with a heart-shaped pizza.

But imagine opening your door to a Barbershop Quartet?

Halifax's Just For Fun Barbershop Quartet have been singing together for 7 years. They’re all retired and as their name suggests, they do it just for fun.

They do personal performances in Halifax on Valentine's Day to raise money for their larger choruses and for charities.

They’ve enjoyed seeing the look on people’s faces over the years.

“It can vary from a young lady being so moved that she might tear right up and get us all teared up sometimes, or one of the funniest times I think that I can remember was when we performed to an officer in the forces and he was in his little cubicle and we started singing “Let me call you sweetheart” to this gentleman," laughs Nick Mattison with the Just 4 Fun Barbershop Quartet. "Of course all the other people poured out of their cubicles to come and watch, but he couldn’t help himself from turning into a beet root, while we sang this to him even though we explained it was from his wife.”

When it’s not Valentine's Day, the quartet performs at many different locations, including retirement homes and in hospitals.
