Tampa river goes green for St. Patrick's Day

March 17, 2013 — You can't celebrate St. Patrick's Day without the colour green but in Tampa, they took celebrations to a whole new level.

The Mayor's River O'Green Fest is in its second year and made a big impression on revellers with its use of the colour green.

Festivities centred around Tampa's Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

Officials in Tampa went big and dyed the Hillsborough River in honour of the Emerald Isle.

Green water was accomplished by using 200 pounds of biodegradable dye.

The practise is also done by the city of Chicago but with a slightly different formula.

The mayor of Tampa apparently asked Chicago for the formula ... but the response was it's a St. Patrick's Day secret!

Commander Hadfield sings from Space

Canadian astronaut and International Space Station commander Chris Hadfield was in a festive mood for St. Patrick's Day.

He's been tweeting photos of Ireland and even recorded a festive rendition of the Irish classic "Danny Boy" (Hyperlink only works with IE).
