The Weather Network gets a visit from a fan

Staff writers
June 22, 2012 — Young Matthew Kearney, a student at Westacres Public School in Mississauga, Ontario and a big fan of The Weather Network, got the chance for a tour of the studio recently.

By all accounts, Matthew managed to master the forecast maps while on his tour of the studio.
By all accounts, Matthew managed to master the forecast maps while on his tour of the studio.

Matthew has cerebral palsy, and over the last five years, he and his educational assistant, Karen Del Ben, have formed a close bond, but Matthew will soon be moving on to a middle school.

As a parting gift, Karen organized a tour of the Weather Network for her former charge.

She says she actually integrated viewings of The Weather Network into Matthew's routine over the past year.

"When he's finished his work, he gets to have five, ten minutes of Weather Network time on Youtube," she says.

Matthew is visually impaired, and she says he likes the music and images.

"It's still enough for him to focus on what's going on, to hear who's coming up next. It's very repetitive for him, and he really takes to it."

By reporter Natalie Thomas' account, Matthew mastered the forecast maps while on a tour of the studio.
