The evolution of ski fashion

December 17, 2012 — Hitting the slopes today looks different than it did 40 years ago.

"Things just keep getting better and better," says Craig Binch, a Manager at Mountain Equipment Co-op in Edmonton.

"The membranes they put on things to make them waterproof are more breathable now."

Surprisingly, the cost of modern ski gear has gone down hill.

"Compared to 40 years ago, a lot of things have gotten less expensive," Binch says, adding that there are more high-end performance items available on the market today.

One of the biggest changes in ski fashion is the widespread use of helmets. According to Binch, they were practically non-existent 40 years ago.

"Then they became quite common place on the ski hill," he says, "and now, with improving technologies, they breathe much better and they're much lighter."

Skis have evolved to become more aerodynamic and maneuverable.

If you're planning to hit the slopes, there are plenty of options to keep you safe, warm and stylish.
