Local authorities told the Associated Press that tens of thousands of people are evacuating 17 villages around the Volcano of Fire -- about 16 km away from Antigua, a popular tourist city.

Media reports suggest that nearly 600 metres of lava erupted from the volcano Thursday, along with a series of explosions.
