May 17, 2012 — After forming in the Pacific Monday night, Aletta continues to weaken to a tropical depression.

The Pacific hurricane season officially begins on May 15, but Tropical Storm Aletta formed late Monday night, beating the start of the season by about four hours.

"The last time a tropical storm formed before the official start of the Pacific hurricane season was back in 1996," says Rob Davis, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

Aletta began to weaken on Wednesday and continued to weaken to a tropical depression on Thursday.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic basin doesn't officially begin until June 1.
