Severe flooding in Turkey

May 12, 2010 — Severe flooding in eastern Turkey has left over 3 thousand homes damaged.

A severe downpour in eastern Turkey helped rivers to overflow this week. Both the Murat and Taslicay rivers burst their banks trapping several residents of Agri and Dogubeyazit.

Agri Governor, Murat Guven said they are working around the clock to keep things in order. “The highway connecting Agri and Van was blocked due to flooded Murat river. Since the night, we are trying to keep the road open with our heavy machinery by our governorship and municipality.”

The flooded rivers damaged more than 3 thousand homes in the area. One house completely collapsed killing a 12 year old girl and injuring 3 others.

Hundreds of residents have been forced from their homes and schools remained closed for three straight days.

Flooding is common in eastern Turkey. The region is still recovering from a similar flood that occurred just a couple of weeks ago.
