Ian Jacobs, reporter
February 26, 2013 — Leafy greens are making an appearance a lot earlier than usual in Vancouver, thanks to a newly-established greenhouse.

Operating under the brand name Local Garden, a new mechanical harvesting system sees more than a hundred racks of greens rotate through a controlled filtration system. The 5,700 square-foot farm is used to grow produce in stacked trays.

It's the first of its kind in North America.†

Not having to rely on as much man power to harvest the plants, along with a controlled environment, means better results than normal. The system is designed to grow about 150,000 Ė 200,000 lbs of leafy greens a year, depending on the variety.

With the ability to harvest inside under more humid conditions, Vancouverites are provided with fresh local produce at a time of year when it normally isnít available.†

A recent decision to add 13 new farmer's markets throughout Vancouver, combined with more community gardens like Local Garden, is part of a new vision to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world.†
