Winter Damage and your Car

March 25, 2010 — Ontario Provincial Police from several different regions all gathered at Woodbine Racetrack this morning to inspect and remove unsafe vehicles from the road.

The winter months can have a damaging affect on your vehicle. And police are doing their best to ensure safety on the roads.

Toronto, York, Guelph and Halton OPP all gathered at Woodbine Racetrack this morning for Project Spring Clean Up. The goal of this inspection blitz is to look over several cars for winter damage. Any unsafe or potentially dangerous vehicles are pulled of the highway as part of a safety regulation.

Severe winter conditions can wreak havoc on your car without you even being aware of it. Although this winter was much less active than most, there's still a few things you should look out for.

  • Rust: Winter road salt and other seasonal weather conditions severely affect your car and could cause damage like rust.
  • Windshield Wipers: Windshield wipers should be replaced every 6 months.
  • Car Fluids: Car fluids act differently from winter to summer so it's important to check your fluids at the beginning of each new season.

Other things like tire pressure, car batteries and leaking oil are important to stay on top of as well.

Police say instead of sacrificing your safety as well as the safety as others, drivers should be proactive and get their vehicles ready before each new season.
