After one of the mildest winters on record, Canadians are in for a more "typical" winter this year. 

"Do expect some shifts in volatile weather patterns," warns Bryn Jones, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "Periods of nice weather will be offset by stormy weather."

Unlike last year, Jones adds that Canadians are bound to see a few harsh bites this winter. 

Large temperatures swings are expected from one side of the country to the other. Colder than normal conditions are forecast for much of the Northwest Territories into Nunavut and across the Boreal and Parkland regions of the Prairie provinces. While the eastern Maritimes and Newfoundland will not be immune from cold weather, temperatures are expected to average above normal in these regions. 

That's not to say the winter season won't be active however. Above average precipitation is forecast for Atlantic Canada and areas near the upper Great Lakes thanks in part to milder water temperatures.
